The Plague Charmer

The Plague CharmerThe Plague Charmer by Karen Maitland

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Hmmm, I have mixed feelings about this book, the story of a coastal village in the 1300s, just as the plague hits, it’s quite slow to start but then ramps up to feel quite claustrophobic. A bit of a weird complaint for a book (specially one that felt slow at first) but it almost felt like there was too much in it. There’s a sea witch, a religious zealot, a dwarf, a cult, a dubious priest, a mysterious village and a noblewoman trapped in a loveless marriage, to name but a few bits of the plot. It’s okay, it’s very atmospheric and I do like books that can place me in a different era but it’s not my favourite Karen Maitland and it actually felt a bit of a relief to actually finish it, it’s taken me a lot longer than normal to get through this book.
